In 1957, three young men with guitars and a banjo began an amazing journey that would take them from San Francisco to the top of the American music world.
The Kingston Trio, Dave Guard, Bob Shane and Nick Reynolds, burst onto the scene with their fist hit single, "Tom Dooley" in 1958, and never looked back. Their unique blend of calypso, traditional folk, contemporary ballads and having a rollicking good time took the country by storm. Within a few short months, they were the number one singing group in America.
In the course of a career spanning a remarkable fifty years, The Kingston Trio has performed for millions of people around the world, sold millions of hit records, and changed the face of American music forever.
By many accounts, the Trio single-handedly opened the door for countless folk singers, including Peter, Paul and Mary, The Limeliters, Joan Baez, Judy Collins and Bob Dylan. They were responsible for the Grammy Awards creating a Folk category, winning the first one for their album, "The Kingston Trio At Large," in 1960. The Trio was the first group ever to have four albums in the Top Ten at the same time. They pioneered the college concert tour and made lifelong fans who attend Kingston Trio concerts to this day, bringing their children and their children's children to join in the fun.
This 50th Anniversary documentary celebrates the exceptional Kingston Trio and the remarkable musical talent that continues to entertain and delight their fans with a mix of song, wit and just plain 'havin' a good time.'
Extensive interviews with Bob Shane, one of the founding members of the Kingston Trio, and John Stewart, who replaced Dave Guard in 1961, highlight this absorbing look at the Kingston Trio, their lives and times.
